PROCESSING
All serum and plasma are from fasting donors with naturally occurring lipid
levels unless otherwise requested. Serum is processed as described in CLSI document C37-A (for a copy of this document go to www.clsi.org). All units
are drawn into dry bags chilled in an ice slurry and immediately processed
either by centrifugation and allowed to clot for serum or treated with the
appropriate volumes of heparin, EDTA or citrate if plasma is required. All
units are tested for HIV 1 and 2, HbsAg, HCV and syphilis and frozen and held at –70o
C. on the day of draw (usually within 6 hours of collection). For pooling,
units are thawed and depending on the needs of the receiving laboratory
either sterile filtered or left unfiltered (please note, plasma cannot be
filtered) and finally either sent in bulk or aliquoted. All pricing is
calculated for lots of 500 mL or greater.
ANALYTE LEVELS
Solomon Park has traditionally specialized in providing serum and plasma
with known levels of various lipids. We have also provided serum and plasma
with other analytes. If your laboratory is interested in pools reflecting
other analytes you should inquire at orders@solomonpark.com. For pricing the
following represent normal lipid levels:
| Total Cholesterol |
160-220 mg/dL |
| HDL Cholesterol |
40-60 mg/dL |
| Triglycerides |
80-150 mg/dL |

CHOLESTEOL REFERENCE VALUES
Reference Values using the Abel Kendall reference method for
cholesterol can be established on pooled sera at any of the
Cholesterol Reference Method Laboratory Network (CRMLN) centers
listed below. These centers can also provide triglyceride values,
however, the triglyceride values are not reference method values.
The reference method for Triglycerides is the Chromatropic acid
method. Only the CDC Division of Laboratory Science is certified to
run this test. For information on how reference methods are set and
the certification program, see the CDC Division of laboratory
Science at http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/dls/crmln/crmln.htm#introduction.
The term, reference value is very precisely defined by the IUPAC and
interested readers are referred to their compendium at http://www.iupac.org/publications/analytical_compendium/
Laboratories wishing to have reference values established on pools
manufactured at Solomon Park can request that we send aliquots from
the pools to any of the CRMLN centers. If a specific center is not
requested, we will send the pool aliquots to the NWLRL in Seattle.
Duplicate determinations are recommended by the centers when
establishing these levels.
The cost for these determinations is separate from serum costs and
are determined by the Cholesterol Reference Method Laboratory
Network. |
