Solomon Park Research Laboratories, Inc., supplies the biomedical scientific research sector with the highest quality of human blood plasma products.

While serum and plasma are both from the liquid part of the blood once the blood cells, red, PBMCs, and platelets, have been removed. The fundamental difference between these two products is whether the blood has clotted or not. The serum is what remains after the blood has clotted, while plasma is the remaining liquid with an added anticoagulant to prevent the blood from clotting.

The reason it is crucial to differentiate between plasma and serum is that the blood clotting process naturally alters the proteins in serum by activating the platelets and releasing serum albumin. Different studies will require the unchanged proteins as found in the plasma rather than the naturally changed proteins, as seen in the serum.

Succinctly stated, blood clotting is an essential function in that it initiates a cascade of proteases, resulting in the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. Thrombin is an enzyme that converts fibrinogen into fibrin which clots the blood.

Solomon Park’s Plasma Biological Services: How they work

Solomon Park Research Laboratories supplies the research industry with the highest-quality in vitro human plasma. Our regulatory-compliant and privacy-protected biorepository includes human plasma samples collected and processed from whole blood samples. They are either supplied fresh or frozen via our trademarked SPRL-StoTrac™ source to destination logistics service.

As with all other Solomon Park Research Lab’s biological services, the process to supply human plasma begins at our donor center. We source the right donor to meet your study’s requirements, either draw 500 mL or 50 mL (a short draw) from our participating and willing donor, and finally extract the plasma from the drawn whole blood sample.

As described above, to create plasma, we separate out the blood cells, platelets, and add an anticoagulant to the remaining liquid. This prevents the blood from clotting and changing the plasma proteins, which will alter the possible outcomes of a scientific study if the wrong blood liquid is used.

What you should know about Solomon Park’s Plasma Biological Services

Solomon Park’s human plasma products are available in different vial sizes, including pooled serum to individual donor draws carefully selected according to specific research study requirements.

At Solomon Park, our biorepository includes different plasma materials from healthy human plasma to diseased plasma, sourced explicitly from individual donors as per the unique scientific research study requirements.

Our plasma products are frozen and shipped frozen or shipped fresh on gel packs, using our SPRL-StoTrac™ storage and logistics service.

We prioritize consistency across all of our human blood and urine products, including Solomon Park’s plasma products. This allows you, the research scientist, or program director peace of mind, knowing that your test samples are consistent across the total number of samples you request.
